Thanks to our Mihi Tutors!

Last term, some wonderful students from Mellville Intermediate in Hamilton helped Room 5, via Skype, to develop our Mihi, or way of introducing ourselves.

It was all very new to Room 5 so we had to learn everything from scratch, right from when you introduce your Mum and Dad and say which school we attend. We have been learning our Mihi this whole term.

Last week we had a brilliant afternoon where we had lots of our parents come and hear us recite our mihi. It was great! Today we got to perform once again, this time for our Room 8 tutors from Mellville Intermediate.

Check out this video they made of us performing to them!

Thanks to our wonderful tutors, you were great and we could not have been so fabulous at our Mihi Recital without you!

You can also read what they wrote about us on their blog here:

The Erupting Volcano Experiment

We made a volcano erupt by using the following ingredients and equipment:
  • a volcano shaped mould
  • vingegar
  • baking soda
  • dishwashing liquid
We repeated the experiment several times (after changing one thing each time) to see what would give us the biggest eruption!

We found that if we put more baking soda the "lava" became very thick and bubbly and it came out of the volcano quicker. Do you know that if you put no baking soda in that the volcano doesn't erupt?!

Janison said that the baking soda made the "lava" rise and pop out of the volcano!

Discovery Time: Using Language K4S

Wow, another action packed morning of Discovery Time in Room 5 this week.

This week our focus was the Using Language, Symbols and Text part of the K4S.

Since that is such a big area we looked at Literacy specifically and discussed how we work to improve the Language and Text part of the K4S - using our reading and writing skills!

Check out us in action in the video below!

Science Experiment 1: Liquid to FOAM!

We are doing science experiments this term to see if we can CHANGE things.

Today we wanted to see if we could change liquids to a foam!

We looked at the very cool ScienceBob's experiment and wanted to try it ourselves!

Check out our video below of the Fantastic Foaming Fountain!

If you want to make the Fantastic Foaming Fountain at home (of course with your parents supervising), you can get the instructions and equipment needed from here: http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/toothpaste.php

Discovery Time - Thinking K4S

Today was our very first session of Discovery Time.
Today we were focusing on the Thinking part of the K4S and our session was all about Making Connections.

These were the activities Rachel set up for us:
  • Play-doh
  • Big Blocks
  • Puzzles
  • Toys
  • Crazy Caterpillar
  • Brain Teasers

We got to choose which activities we worked at. We had to keep the K4S of thinking in our head the whole time. We had to think about how we were doing the activity and what else we could do. We got to do as many activities as we liked.

"My favourite activity was big blocks. I had to think about how to make a kingdom" - Fynn

"I liked doing play-doh. I had to think about what I was going to make" - Callum

"I liked playing with the toys. I had to think about what they would say to each other" - Devansh

"I liked doing the crazy caterpillar. I had to think about carefully putting the marble on his hands" - Maria

"I liked the puzzles because they were fun. I had to think about which piece would go in the right place" - Regan

  • My Mum makes me breakfast - Regan
  • My Mum gives me lollies - Fynn
  • When I was only little, my Mum sewed back on my teddy's ear - Trinity

Ruben the Road Safety Bear

What a great day today with an extra special visit from Ruben the Road Safety Bear.

He taught us about sneaky driveways, crossing the road carefully and lots more!

When we cross the road we have to:
~ Stop
~ Look
~ Listen
~ Hold hands with an adult

Take a look at the photo of some of Room 5 dancing to his road safety song!

Visit Ruben on his own website here:  http://www.ruben.govt.nz

Teriffic Tadpoles

We have some terrific tadpoles in our classroom that Connor gave to us last term.

We have been looking after them for about 4 weeks.
They are getting very big and fat but don't have any legs yet.

We are waiting for them to get legs so they can start changing into frogs!

We have started making some cool frogs for art, and today we watched a few videos that show the life cycle of the frog. They are really cool!

Regan's medals

Today Regan wore some special medals to our ANZAC Assembly.

They were lent to him by his Pop.

We thought he looked very smart and he was proud to be wearing them for such a special occasion.

ANZAC Ceremony

Today we held a very special ANZAC Assembly in the hall. Lots of visitors came, including men who were in the war.

We made a special wreath yesterday which Mana and Aleisha presented on behalf of our class.

It was a great assembly that made us really think about all the soldiers that fought to keep our country safe.

Buddy Headshots

Today we used the digital camera to take a 'headshot' of our buddy. A headshot is a photo that shows the face/head, neck and shoulders of a person. We are going to use our photos on our responsibilities chart. In pairs, we needed to carefully take a picture of our buddy that showed:

  • All of their head & face

  • Their neck

  • Just the top of their shoulders

Take a look at the slideshow below to see some of the photos we took.

Do you think we achieved our success criteria?

Our Digital Camera

We are learning how to use our class digital camera.

We started by talking about all the parts of the camera with a buddy after looking at some giant photos of our digital camera. Then we did a think-pair-share activity and told some other people in our class what we thought the parts of the camera were. When we discussed them as a class and we labelled them in yellow on our 'big camera'.

Next, we talked about what the different parts of the camera did and why they were important. We labelled these in blue on our 'big camera'.

We know that:

  • You shouldn't put your fingers near the lens as it is the 'eye' of the camera
  • You can press the 'playback' button if you want to look at your photos
  • The zoom button can help you to see something closer up
  • There is a button to switch between taking photos and movies on our camera
  • We need to put the lanyard around our neck when using the digital camera.

Here are some photos of everything we learned:

Learning with Play-doh!

Today we learned our spelling words using play-doh!

We worked with a buddy to make as many Essential List 1 or 2 spelling words as we could using the letter cutters.

Then we read them to our buddy. It was soooo much fun!

How to keep safe in an earthquake

With the recent events in Christchurch, and our current topic, we have been listening to this great song made by Julie Wylie.
It is all about how to keep safe in an earthquake.

The main words are:
Stop, drop,
be like a turtle,
Under the table,
away from the windows.
Stay still,
under the table,
Wait 'till the shaking stops!

Take a listen on the video below!

National Silence - Remembering Christchurch

Today at 12:51pm we thought about Christchurch and all the many families and children affected by the earthquake that happened exactly a week ago.

We talked about how sad some of the people will be at this time and thought of how their houses and jobs will be affected and possibly ruined.

Just before 12:51pm the whole school gathered on the field and made a giant circle.
There we had our 2 minutes of silence.

Thinking of you all in Christchurch,
